Any month works. Some months cost less

Stump grinding is not seasonal work in the way planting is. The machine does not care what month it is and north Georgia rarely freezes hard enough to matter. But three things do move with the calendar, and they affect what you pay and how long you wait.

Demand. The busiest stretch for tree crews here runs from late winter through spring, when people look at the garden for the first time in months, and again immediately after any significant storm. Booking into those windows means longer waits and less negotiating room. The quietest stretch is usually mid to late autumn, after the summer storm season and before the spring rush.

Ground conditions. Georgia clay after a wet week is the enemy of this job. A heavy machine on saturated clay leaves ruts across your lawn that you will be repairing for longer than the grinding took. Crews will often reschedule themselves for this reason. If you have a choice, book after a dry spell rather than during the wettest part of February or March.

What you are planting afterwards. This is the one that actually decides it for most people. If you are putting grass down over the spot, you want the grind done in time to seed in the right window for your grass type. For fescue, which is most of what is in Woodstock front gardens, that means grinding in late summer so you can seed in early autumn. For bermuda or zoysia, grind in spring and lay in late spring or early summer.

If the tree came down in a storm, none of this applies and you should just get it done. The stump is not getting easier and a torn stump left through a wet season is an unpleasant surprise for whoever eventually grinds it.

One genuine seasonal argument for waiting: if you have one stump now and you suspect another tree is going, waiting to do both together saves you an entire callout fee. That is worth more than any seasonal price difference.
