Water oak is everywhere in the established parts of Cherokee County, particularly the older Towne Lake streets and downtown. It grows large and it rots from the inside, which is why so many of them come down or get taken down in their fifties and sixties.
These are expensive grinds for two reasons. Diameter, obviously, since a mature water oak stump routinely measures past thirty six inches at the flare. And density, because oak is far harder on grinder teeth than pine.
Water oak also spreads surface roots, though less aggressively than sweetgum. If the tree was close to a driveway or a walkway, ask about the roots lifting the concrete while the crew is there.
One limit to know before you ask about those roots. A runner heading under a driveway or a walkway cannot be chased without breaking the concrete, so it gets cut at the edge and left. That is the right call, but it does mean a slab that has already lifted stays lifted, and fixing it is concrete work rather than stump work.
A rotted-out water oak is sometimes cheaper than its diameter suggests, because the interior is already soft. Mention it if the trunk was hollow.

The trunk was hollow. Does that make it cheaper?
Usually a little. The soft interior grinds fast, but the outer shell and the root flare are still solid wood, and that is what sets the time. Expect some allowance rather than half price, and mention it up front so the quote reflects it.
Can I plant grass or a new tree where the stump was?
Grass, yes. Fill the void with topsoil rather than the chips, since decomposing wood robs nitrogen from new grass. Planting a new tree in the same hole needs full removal rather than grinding, because the old root mass is still in the way.
How long does it take?
A single accessible stump is usually thirty to sixty minutes on site. The scheduling window is longer than the job, which is why crews prefer to do several stumps in one trip.
Is this the cheapest option?
Renting a grinder yourself is cheaper on paper and routinely goes wrong. The machines are heavy, they throw debris, and the day rate plus the trailer usually lands within range of just hiring a crew for one stump. For two or more, hiring wins outright.
