Grinding costs three to five dollars an inch of stump diameter in the Atlanta metro. Full extraction is typically two to four times that, because it is excavation rather than grinding, and it brings a machine onto your lawn that grinding does not.
Grinding leaves the roots. That sounds like a problem and almost never is. Buried roots decompose over a few years and nothing you plant in grass over the top will notice.

Ask what depth below grade, in inches. Four to six means it is a grind, whatever the quote calls it. Twelve or more means they are going deep enough for construction. If they are digging the root ball out with an excavator, that is genuine removal and the price will reflect it.
How do I measure my stump?
Measure straight across the widest point at ground level, including the flare, not the trunk higher up. People routinely underestimate by six or eight inches because they measure the wrong place, then get a quote that feels high.
How deep does the grinding go?
